Performing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics

“My Olympic experience was one that I will never forget. To be in Beijing, at the 2008 Olympics, competing for my country and feeling the spirit of the Olympic celebration in person, it’s something very hard to describe.

“Simply being surrounded by the very best athletes in the world, being able to speak with them and learn from them, was an opportunity so few people get. It’s one I will always remember.

“Beijing was incredibly hot and humid, often over 40°C! The Athlete’s Village was breathtaking. It was built brand new for the Games, complete with cafés, international food courts, stores, and a vibrant energy of global unity.”

A Dream Realized

Our Romanian team’s goal was to reach the team finals. And we did!!! We finished 7th overall. But my biggest moment came when I qualified for the Still Rings event final (among the top eight gymnasts in the world.)

“When I stepped onto the podium, I could feel my hands trembling. But once I saluted the judges, it was like time stopped. The crowd disappeared. Only focus remained.

“My performance earned a score of 15.850, placing 7th in the world. My dream as a seven-year-old boy just came true.”

Moments Beyond the Arena

“After competition ended, I finally allowed myself to explore Beijing,  including the Great Wall of China, truly one of the world’s wonders. And when the Closing Ceremony arrived, walking into the Bird’s Nest alongside the greatest athletes on Earth was an indescribable feeling.”

“My next goal is to return to the Olympic Games — this time as a coach — helping another child’s dream come true.”

From Olympian to Coach

After immigrating to Canada in 2010, Robert turned his Olympic experience into mentorship and excellence in coaching.

Representing Alpha Gymnastics Academy, he quickly became one of the most successful coaches in the Windsor–Essex region, leading athletes to numerous provincial and national medals.
